Certified is the floor. Qualified is the standard. The gap between the two costs lives. Every Exigent practitioner has crossed it.

Daryl D. Black

Founder & Principal Practitioner

Daryl D. Black founded Exigent on the conviction that the gap between certified and qualified costs lives — and that the most consequential incidents demand leadership built on operational experience, not classroom credentials.

Daryl has held command-level positions on emergency activations representing three of the five largest insured loss events in Canadian history — the 2016 Fort McMurray Wildfire, the 2013 Southern Alberta Floods, and the 2024 Jasper Wildfire Complex. His operational experience spans more than 35 years across wildfire, flood, search and rescue, and complex multi-agency response, working at the command layer alongside police, fire, emergency medical services, and provincial and national wildfire agencies.

He serves as Planning Section Chief on Canada Task Force 2 (CANTF2). He holds qualifications across the Incident Command System general staff and the leadership curriculum from L-180 through L-381. He is the author of the forthcoming guide on community re-entry following large-scale evacuations.

The broader Exigent cadre will be presented as it is finalized. Selection is by invitation. Each member appears at the same depth and tone — no hierarchy of presentation, just qualifications.
